As a Civil Engineer I could not walk past a construction site in the centre of Freetown without taking some pictures. On first reaction I was just horrified at the lack of health and safety precautions. The men at the top of the building are pouring concrete using buckets and standing on beams or boards about 9 inches wide with a 30 foot fall to the concrete road below! Those working further down the building aren't provided with a handrail but they do have a wider working platform! It did set me thinking about the basic economics of the situation and that when work is scarce people will work under appalling circumstances in order to feed their families.
