TRAINING AND ORPHANAGE PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to present a programme of action to develop and support the local economy in Kono by ensuring that local people have an opportunity to improve their economic, health and social welfare through employment focused technical-vocational training along side awareness raising general education and health promotion initiatives. A further objective is to provide alternative family homecare for around 100 children orphaned during the recently concluded rebel war.

We have looked at priorities expressed by residents over the last two years and have summarised the main areas of their interests as follows. Residents of Kono want an:

  • Equal Kono
People in Kono want to feel they are part of an inclusive society. A place where all have equal access to services and support and the opportunity to achieve and celebrate success. The majority of Kono residents have, for the past 14 years, known only war and post war emergency recovery. Many lack basic comforts and have few choices about their environment, their homes, their work and leisure. Many more have even fewer or none of these limited choices.
  • Skilled Kono
The people want opportunity to widen participation, raise attainment, broaden and strengthen the skills base of the District.
  • Enterprising Kono
The people want, through our training and education endeavours, to make Kono a centre for diverse, growing and competitive businesses of all sizes, bringing jobs and increased prosperity to the community through sustainable economic development.
  • Healthy Kono
Kono residents want everyone to have a fulfilling long life and to be as healthy as possible in mind and body for their whole lives. We hope to assist in the achievement of this objective through our health promotion, particularly Reproductive Health, activities.

HIV/AIDS SENSITIZATION PROJECT

Ahkom was commissioned in December of 2007 by the National HIV/AIDS Secretariat and the Kono District Council to carry out a HIV/AIDS sensitization project in five villages and towns in the Tankoro Chiefdom of Kono District. The task was carried out by our Sexual Health Promotion department SEDP.

Because of the high rate of ignorance of the disease we appreciate assitance to continue our sensitization programme from any wellwisher visiting our website. For more details please send us an email on our contact form.
